Your Sight Test

A Clear Picture Of Your Vision And Eye Health

Your sight test at Clarus Opticians checks how well you see and examines the health of your eyes. We explain the tests as we go and tailor the examination to your age, symptoms, medical history and clinical needs.

Understanding Your Symptoms And Daily Life

We begin by asking about changes in your vision, eye discomfort, current glasses or contact lenses, medicines and general health. Family history can help identify particular risks. We also discuss reading, screen work, driving and other activities so your prescription advice fits your daily life.

Measuring Vision And Finding Your Prescription

We measure the vision in each eye and assess how your eyes focus. An initial objective measurement, such as retinoscopy, helps guide the prescription check. You then compare lenses so we can refine the result. We assess near or intermediate vision where relevant to your needs.

Checking How The Eyes Work Together

We assess eye movements, pupil responses and binocular vision as appropriate. These checks help us investigate symptoms such as headaches, eyestrain or double vision and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Examining The Front And Back Of The Eyes

A slit lamp gives a magnified view of the eyelids, cornea and lens, helping us assess conditions such as dry eye and cataracts. We also examine the retina and optic nerve. Dilating drops may be needed for a more detailed view; we explain temporary blur and light sensitivity and advise you about driving.

Eye Pressure And Contact Tonometry

Eye pressure measurements help us assess glaucoma risk alongside the optic nerve and, when indicated, visual field testing. We use contact tonometry when appropriate. A small measuring tip gently touches the cornea; for Goldmann applanation tonometry, numbing drops and a diagnostic dye are used first. We explain the technique and help you remain comfortable. A normal pressure reading alone cannot rule out glaucoma. We interpret it together with the rest of your examination.

OCT Imaging Beneath The Surface

Optical coherence tomography uses light to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the retina and, depending on the scan, the optic nerve. It can help identify and monitor macular disease, retinal fluid and changes associated with glaucoma. The scan is quick and does not touch the eye. OCT is available as part of our enhanced assessment where appropriate. We discuss the findings with you and can compare scans over time. It supports the clinical examination; it does not replace examination of the whole eye or guarantee that every condition will be detected.

Your Results And Next Steps

We explain your prescription, eye health findings and recommended recall. If treatment, monitoring or specialist referral is needed, we discuss the reason and urgency. You have time to ask questions before choosing any eyewear.
